— Residential Cottage —

Geneva, NY

Project Scope—

As a class, we were prompted to design a residential home that fit within a 20 foot by 40 foot rectangle. This challenged us to design with intention and use the space we were limited to in the most efficient yet effective way. This project was also our first large scale assignment using the software, REVIT. So bear with the not-so-professional looking renderings!

Project Concept—

Located in the rural outskirts of Geneva, New York. The young couple are wanting an inviting space to spend their free time in that invokes comfort and a sense of serenity. For such a small footprint, a great deal of natural light and vaulted ceilings create the illusion of a larger space. The main floor is for the living, dining, and kitchen areas. The level below grade will house the master suite and an office that can eventually become a second bedroom. This level below the grade will only be half covered by the earth, allowing for outside access from the master suite and adjacent hallway.

The couple has an eclectic style but especially love to find a way to mix the old with the new. Functionality is key with these two, along with comfort. They want a humble home and a simple life. The blend of rustic and modern pieces will speak to their balanced relationship they share.

Concept mood board—

These are my favorite to create! It is synonymous with an artist’s sketches; acting as a form of brainstorming through the use of found and curated images to inherently create a ‘mood’. Over the years I have made countless mood boards and thoroughly enjoy piecing them together to create any sort of feeling.

Modest Exterior—

This model was built using REVIT, a computer software that worked in 2D & 3D simultaneously. Meaning, the designer can toggle back and fourth from the floor plan to the 3D model with a click of a button. This was incredibly fun to build, although it had its challenges.

First floor plan—

This image is the 2D version of what is pictured above. All sorts of measurements and required clearances go in to documents like these. They are fun to play around with and create all sorts of configured spaces.

Living room rendering—

This image of the cottage living room shows the beginnings of my work with Photoshop and REVIT as rendering softwares. However I still believe that this image captures the overall feel for what I was designing and aiming for in terms of aesthetics.

Kitchen rendering—

Clean but with rustic touches—overall I was pleased with the outcome in terms of aesthetics, however, there are lots of functionality no-no’s going on in this kitchen that we had not yet learned. If I were to go back, I would definitely reconfigure this kitchen!
